SPF and DKIM can be compared to a business license or a doctor’s medical degree displayed on the wall of an office- They help show legitimacy.
SPF
- ( Sender Policy Framework)
- This a way for a domain to list all the servers they send emails from. See it as a confirmation system that helps to show a person is who they say they are UserID.
DKIM
- (Domain Identified Mail)
- lets domain owners automatically sign emails from their domain. This is pretty similar to a check and who wrote it.
- Digital signature.
- Stores the Public key
- Private key is kept secret by the sender, who would sign the header with this key.
DMARC
- (Domain-based Message Authentication Reporting)
- Tells a receiving email server what to do given the results after checking SPF and DKIM
- DMARC can be set many different ways;
- Instruct mail servers to quarantine emails that fail SPF or DKIM (or Both) to reject such emails, or to deliver them.
- Can contain instructions to send reports to domain administrators of which emails pass and which fail the checks.
